About Upskill Barrydale

Creating space for rural youth to learn, tell stories, and thrive

Our Mission

Upskill Barrydale is a registered nonprofit (Reg: 2024/154633/08) based in the rural town of Barrydale, Western Cape. Our mission is to empower young people through digital storytelling, creative media, and AI-assisted tools — equipping them with 21st-century skills to share their culture, voice their realities, and generate income.

Why Barrydale?

Barrydale is rich in cultural heritage and Khoi roots, yet its youth face poverty, unemployment, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, and lack of opportunity. Upskill Barrydale works to bridge that gap with accessible, creative training — giving youth tools to build confidence, careers, and community.

Who We Serve

Our programs focus on youth aged 15–25, prioritizing those who are out of school or unemployed. We especially uplift members of the Khoi First Nation, valuing their ancestral knowledge and identity.

Our Founder

Hamish Graham Imrie Abbott is a passionate storyteller, educator, and creative activist. He founded Upskill Barrydale with the vision of making tech and creativity accessible to rural youth. Through hands-on mentorship, community partnerships, and free tools, Hamish helps young people unlock their creative potential.
